Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium, which was originally built in 338 BC, is the stage where the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896. In ancient times it was used for the Naked Race in Great Panathenaia Games. During the years it was abandoned and its marbles were incorporated into many Athenian buildings. In 1836 traces of the ancient Stadium where uncovered and the Panathenaic Stadium was reconstructed from Pentelic marble for the Olympic Games of 1896. Nowadays, it mainly operates as a concert stadium and is the finishing line of the Athens Classic Marathon, which takes place every year in early November.
