Athens Sightseeing
Athens is celebrated for its historical sites and monuments, which date back to ancient times. On the other hand, there are also a plethora of modern buildings that one should visit while touring Athens.
The most famous, of course, is the Acropolis Hill, with its breathtaking monuments, such as the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, the Ancient Agora, the Theater of Dionysus and the Herod Atticus Odeon. Close to the Athens Acropolis are the Areios Pagos Rock and the Pnyx.
Around Syntagma Square, the most central point in the city of Athens, we recommend visiting the Olympeion Site, Zappeion Hall, the Parliament Building and the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, which is guarded by the Evzone Soldiers. Behind Zappeion Hall is the Panathenaic Marble Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896. Below Syntagma Square and near the Acropolis Hill are the old neighborhoods of Plaka, Psyri and Thisseion, which are ideal for exploration and a really good meal.
Along Panepistimiou Street, one of the main streets in the city of Athens, you can admire the triad of neoclassical buildings: the Library, the Academy and the University. The center of Athens is packed with marvellous museums, such as the Acropolis Museum and the Ancient Agora Museum, located on the top or the slopes of the hill, the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Goulandris Cycladic Art Museum, the National Historical Museum, the Numismatic Museum, and the War Museum. Finally, visits to the new ‘Megaro Moussikis’ Music Hall and Lycabettus Hill are a must.
The suburbs of Athens offer excellent sightseeing, such as the Nautical Museum, the ‘Averof’ Battleship and charming seaside areas of Mikrolimano, Kastela, and Freattyda in Piraeus, the Olympic Stadium and Athletic Facilities in Maroussi, the Goulandris Natural History Museum in Kifissia. Further outside Athens city, we suggest visiting the amazing ancient sites and their museums in Elefsina, Vravrona, and Marathon, as well as the impressive Temple of Poseidon in Sounion. |
