Sightseeing in Athens & Attica

Athens is celebrated for its historical sites and monuments, which date back to ancient times. On the other hand, there are also a plethora of modern buildings that one should visit while touring Athens.

The most famous, of course, is the Acropolis Hill, with its breathtaking monuments, such as the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, the Ancient Agora, the Theater of Dionysus and the Herod Atticus Odeon. Close to the Athens Acropolis are the Areios Pagos Rock and the Pnyx.

Around Syntagma Square, the most central point in the city of Athens, we recommend visiting the Olympeion Site, Zappeion Hall, the Parliament Building and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is guarded by the Evzone Soldiers. If you are lucky enough, you may see the changing of the guard. Behind Zappeion Hall is the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaron), where the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896. Below Syntagma Square and near the Acropolis Hill are the old neighbourhoods of Plaka, Psyrri and Thisseion, which are ideal for exploration, walks and a really good meal.

Along Panepistimiou Street, one of the main streets in the city of Athens, you can admire the triad of neoclassical buildings: the Library, the Academy and the University. The center of Athens is packed with marvellous museums, such as the New Acropolis Museum, where you will admire exhibits from the Parthenon and findings from the 5th century B.C. You can also visit the Ancient Agora Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Goulandris Cycladic Art Museum, the National Historical Museum, the Numismatic Museum, and the War Museum. Finally, you may like to pay a visit to the ‘Megaro Moussikis’ Music Hall to attend a concert, or climb up Lycabettus Hill and watch the unrestricted views of Athens.

The suburbs of Athens offer excellent sightseeing, such as the Nautical Museum, the ‘Averof’ Battleship and charming seaside areas of Kastela and Freattyda in Piraeus. Head to Mikrolimano and Pasalimani and you will have the chance to take a walk by the sea gazing at the luxurious yachts, sample fresh seafood and fish at the nearby restaurants, or even spend a night out at the various bars.

In Maroussi, located in the northern suburbs of Athens, you may visit the Olympic Stadium and its Athletic Facilities, and in Kifissia you will find the Goulandris Natural History Museum.

If a lively night out is what you are looking for, drive down to Posidonos Avenue, along the southern coast of Attica, where you will discover some of the most popular night clubs in Athens. You may select one of the restaurants in Glyfada for your meal or one of the coastal cafés to relish an ice coffee by the sea.

Further outside Athens city, we suggest visiting the amazing ancient sites and their museums in Elefsina, Vravrona, and Marathon, as well as the impressive Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, from where you will gaze at the wonderful vista of the sea and the Saronic islets.

You may also like to visit the beaches on the eastern coast of Attica, including the popular beaches of Rafina, Nea Makri, Porto Rafti, Avlaki, Loutsa, Schinias, Mati, Oropos and Chalkoutsi.
